Family History Friday: School Fete, 1966

School Fete, 1966

This is a photo of a photo taken in 1966 – my sister Carol and the elder of my four brothers – at the lucky dip, Gray Street State School fete, Hamilton, Victoria.  Carol was a year younger than myself. Both so young and innocent.

Those were the days, hope they had a good prezzy, I never went for Lucky Dips, rather spend my money of the lollies, remember the ones in the paper patty’s that always left little bits of paper on the toffee, yum

    • Hi Raroto, nearly all schools have an annual fun raising fete (fair). You pay your money and reach in and grab your ‘lucky dip’ and see what surprise you get. As in ‘dipping’ in your hand and getting ‘lucky’ with one of the better treats. I suppose they are still popular. There would be separate dips for boys and girls — or Jack and Jills as this one shows. Just googled, and yes, lucky dips are still popular as a school fund-raiser.

Nice! It’s something like the lucky draws we have here except in yours, everyone gets to ‘win’ something. I don’t have much luck when it comes to lottery or lucky draws. The only thing I’ve won was a hairdryer! But this was during one of the office functions, not a school fundraiser. During my schooling days, we normally hold food fair and jumble sale. The school sold cookies and cakes that were freshly baked by us students in our Home Science kitchen. Fun times!

        • I used to make icing sugar mice to sell at the fete on the cake stalls, I wasn’t much for sponge cake baking. Lotteries – I once won a $100 vocuher at Coles a long time ago. Best win was $1000 voucher to be spent over a selection of stores. That was great fun and a surprise to win. Free entry during Christmas shopping at a participating store. 😀

    • Sounds like the same thing Kayti. I wasn’t aware of the photo until my sister died. It was on that visit to my mum that I photoed this photo. I was going to crop it before I posted but decided not to. I had to go outside to get good light. My camera has good macro. 😀
