Haiku Challenge: This Old Woman

I’ve been wanting to try Ronovan’s Weekly Haiku Challenge.

It’s taken me ages to write something which I think qualifies and still allows me to show you my upcoming sewing project. I scored 3 metres of vintage material on eBay, and it arrived today. Hard to believe its 30 years old! The pattern is vintage as well, but I loved it at first sight. I expect to make a skirt and the strappy top.

I’m using the Haiku Poem – English Form. 17 syllables over three lines in a 5 / 7 / 5 pattern. Two complete sentences overlapping in the middle. Supposed to make some sort of sense and point to opposing ideas. I think I’ve done okay.

Ronovan gives two words to be used – Cover, Colour – synomyns are allowed as long as it doesn’t change the meaning. Here goes …

this Old Woman shall

don pink broderie anglaise,

the colour of Girl

That was fun.

Have a nice day / evening / whatever!  🙂

Love the material and the pattern. Will look good. Nice to be able to sew, I’m a real clutz at that sort of thing. Never did finish my cooking apron for high school, used to tuck the hand towel into the waistband. Wonder why I flunked sewing. You wouldn’t believe my grandmother was a tailoress, made all the clothes for her children (2 boys, 2 girls), obviously wasn’t in the genes she passed on.

    • Good morning, Sue, we’ll never forget our cookery apron horrors. 😮 I hadn’t sewn for a long time, until the year before last when I decided to make an outfit to wear to a wedding. Halfway through, one of the plastic cogs running my sewing machine snapped. I figured it was best just to get a new machine, just a basic one. Does the trick. I shouldn’t really sew anything until I lose another stone, but the skirt will be easy to adjust. Mr R’s grandfather was an upholsterer, used a tougher sewing machine. 🙂

  2. Ah that jacket pattern is just the sort of jacket I’ve been looking to buy! Older generational clothes were graceful I think, whereas some today just aren’t.
Well done on the Haiku poem Christine! Yes it did make sense all areas.

    • Thank you, Effy. Haiku is making sense to me now, after reading up Ronovan’s simple explanation of the ‘rules’. It takes some thought, though. I admire yours, and wanted to try my hand at it. Just been over and wandered through your blog, so you’ll have stuff in your moderation queue. Thanks for dropping by. 🙂

I won’t have enough material to make the lovely jacket – and all that pink would be a bit much! I’m thinking a silvery grey – perhaps a heavier fabric as I’ll make trousers the same. I’ll see what looks ‘right’ together. White would be nice, but … white!

Silvery grey would look lovely with that shade of pink. Maybe fine linen type of material for Jacket & trousers. White … ? You ready to wash them after every wearing, the pink would get lost as well.

Know what you mean about 60’s arms. Next time you are at material shop have a look and see if they have any voile the same colour. You could still have a nice top, although not as strappy as you would like and attach voile sleeves

    • I was a bit the same, but once I really understood the main purpose – to show opposing forces – it became an interesting exercise. Thank you, Janet.

Nearly forgot, I’m almost halfway through your book (Kindle) – read in one sitting and not quite game to pick it up again until I catch up on some sleep. ❤ I love it.
