I’ve made a page for to follow up on this post. Earlier this year, I discovered that my best girlfriend’s husband descends from Margaret McKay and John Grant – which makes him Mr R’s 4th cousin, twice removed. Margaret being his great-great-great-great grandmother Flora/Flory Mckay’s sister.

It all goes back to those two marriages in Scotland, in 1815! I would have to use a diagram to work it out, but I rely on my family history software to reveal the relationship. Thanks for commenting, M-R. 😀

I have never worked out how to label the removed and the numbers involved in relationships.Sounds so complex! Shall be interested to see more! Sounds reminiscent of Tasmania!! 🙂

The removals work out when other generations intervene – which happens when an older child gets in an extra generational level than his/her youngest sibling. Women had kids over 20 – 30 year span then. I got hold of a generation cross reference chart from the internet when I first began. I’d never be able to get my head around it on my own!

Amazing to think M-R is probably my 6th cousins once removed. Never could figure out why she was removed. (grin)
