Susan asked about the white thing on his legs …
Wikipedia says:
The pollen basket or corbicula is part of the tibia on the hind legs of certain species of bees. They use the structure in harvesting pollen and returning it to the nest or hive.
Does s/he know ???

Very special shot with the closed buds and the open flower enhancing your bee!

Thanks Barbara. I’m trying not to make it all about the bee. The bush is a hebe, don’t ask what sort. I just found out they are a native of New Zealand.

I didn’t know Hebes were from New Zealand. Yours looks nice and healthy.

They are one plant I do look after – giving the two of them a good prune after the flowers die off. 🙂

Hope you appreciate how hard they work just so you can have honey on your breakfast toast

I haven’t had honey for ages, Sue. I must buy some from the honey man at the weekend. The last lot tasted a bit too smoky. There seems to be lots of them around now that most of the trees along my walk have finished flowering.

And now I know they’re not bumblebees.

Must be the angle you caught this bee in, but if I didn’t know better I’d say s/he is looking over her / his shoulder. Must feel you breathing or something. Fabulous shot, Christine. ❤

Didn’t know before, just checked, male bees do not participate in collections of nectar/pollen they are solely there for the queen bee and die once they have mated with her, she flies off with their equipment still attached to her (not all get selected – who’s the lucky boy hey)

Good question, Susan. I’ve always assumed it was for collecting pollen as they are usually yellow.
