A bit of a flashback here. The weather is so awful and dull outside – and cold – that I thought I’d do something different for a photo. Last summer, when the grass in the paddocks and roadsides had died off, this kangaroo came into our yard to pick at the bit of green. I think this old fellow normally lives in the paddocks behind us as I’ve noticed a single kangaroo laying about on his own during my walk. Kangaroos are common around here, and most homes with unsecured yards get visited overnight when feed is scarce. Sometimes pets and people get injured. Others more desperate will come in daytime like this big fellow who looks in very poor condition. It’s only since our old blue heeler dog died last year, that they venture in past the car and right into our yard.

Nice to have a visit from the old fellow, even though they can be a bit of a pest to the farmers. Wonder if our f/grandchildren will ever see them in their natural habitat

No fear of the kangaroo dying out, Sue, not in our neck of the woods.

What a fascinating glimpse into YOUR environment! I’ve only seen kangaroos in zoos or on Animal Planet — they are remarkable mammals! For me, to be visited by one would be very special. 🙂

Hi Christine. Wow, he looks skinny, and would have appreciated that green grass. Lots of kangaroos in Canberra too, unfortunately too many at the side of the road. 😦

That’s the problem almost everywhere in the country – if only they would stay off the road! The local shire sends a truck early every morning to patrol the town limits, to remove bodies and arrange for injured animals to be destroyed.

The rangers won’t rehabilitate injured roos in Canberra. 😦

If they get two broken legs they cannot be fixed, apparently. Plus the numbers would be overwhelming.

Enjoyed the glimpse of the roo…there is a young bunny under my evergreen outside my office this morning. That is as close as we get to things that are furry gray and jump.
