Overnight, I had second thoughts about the cover I knocked up in Canva (posted yesterday). Too fussy, bad colours, and I think it probably yelled chicklit. Well, my novel might be chicklit meets fantasy, but I’m not objective enough to know.
Back to Canva this morning and made this one. It says fantasy.
I also dropped the series title from ‘The Innkeeper’s Daughter’.
The description on Wattpad: [edited in May, I’ve changed the description]
Taniel has been obsessed with dragons all her life. She knows that the best way for a woman to get close to a dragon is through a dragonrider. But a dragonrider will never consider marrying a lowly innkeeper’s daughter. Not when they have the compulsion to marry within their own gene pool.
Unless … unless they want out … unless they want an inn of their own.
Taniel is furious when she finds out her intended has left the dragonriders. And this is where we join her journey. What is she willing to do, now, to get into the dragons’ world?
Of course it’s not going to be straightforward – not with a witch or two thrown into the mix, along with wizards of dubious intent. Add a vague goblin threat, pirates, a little shape-shifting, and you never know what is going to happen next. Maybe you will … depends if I do my job well enough.
There will be the odd swear word, adult themes, and some violence. My grandchildren can read it.
This first book of the series currently stands at around 80,000 words and each book will be a complete story. Book One: Taniel (ebook) will be published on Amazon and Smashwords on 13th April 2016.
I use Australian English.
I will give you at least three scenes a week: Monday, Wednesday & Friday until completion of the series. I will never ask that you make a purchase to find out what happens in the end.
I invite constructive criticism. I mightn’t like it, but I’m still inviting it.
WARNING: ADVERBS – I read a book laden with adverbs recently, and I realized just how much I missed them. So, I have a sprinkling. Get over it.
Enjoy.
And, so you don’t have to leave my blog to read the first and only scene that has gone live, ever, I’ve added a page to the menu in the top bar. Okay, it’s not real obvious. It drops down from the About Me tab. [edited May – link still works but ‘Taniel’ has its own tab ]
Have a good day. 🙂
I like this cover – def says fantasy to me (well, dragons always do don’t they?). Best of luck and I think it is very admirable to be publishing scenes (and maybe a big incentive for your towards your publishing date too).

Thanks, Claudette. Since my followers will get this book for free anyhow (the ones who want it) I thought I could start sharing the scenes. The roller-coaster has started and I’m not getting off until this story is done. Admirable? I must admit, it’s scary.

I’m looking forward to it, and sometimes we need that added impetus of being “in the spotlight” to get us to do what we really want to do but have been prevaricating about.

Prevaricating is such a prettier word than procrastinating, Claudette. Yes, 2016 is the year I get not one, but two books published! Aiming high. 🙂

See, you worked it out yourself. Though his smile looks like he is thinking of lunch.

You should have just told me it was crap!

No, not crap, just a bit ordinary. The new idea is a big improvement.

I think that cover is more marketable, and just more fun!

Thanks, Babe. It is so much more fun – that’s for sure. In fact, I like it so much it might even turn out to be the real cover. I use this particular dragon a lot on my new author website, but not allowed to have him as a logo under Fotolia terms, so I guess I’ll just have to draw my own.

After seeing your little cards, I have no doubt your own will be…I guess the best word here would be “magical”.

I’m so ashamed those cards fizzled out. I just lost my mojo trying to stick to the prompts. But I do hope to do something like that as companion to my story.

I think those cards, or ones very like, accompanied by the sparsest text, would by HIGHLY marketable as kid lit.

Ahhh, wow, wouldn’t ever have thought of that! I do have a yen to do a dragon drawing series. With determination, commitment, and good time management maybe it will happen! The last index card I did – which I didn’t show anyone – was a group of teddy bears (drawn from memory) from a Teddy Bear Bingo game which I used to play with my kids. 🙂

OMG Christine – this is so exciting! You’ve been talking about your writing but I had no idea it was so evolved.
I love fantasy but I haven’t the faintest clue how to critique a story. I plan to simply enjoy it 😊

Oh good, a fantasy reader! I hope you do like it. I know stories either take or not. What someone hates, another will love. 🙂

I’ve read the first instalment. What’s not to like? – magic, dragons, a less-than-scrupulous wizard. What can go wrong? 😉
