I spotted this Meadow Argus butterfly late this afternoon while out with the Nikon D3000 looking for a photo op.
The meadow argus (Junonia villida) is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae, commonly found in Australia. It is also known as Albin’s Hampstead eye in the United Kingdom, where it has occurred only as an accidental import.

As the butterfly rests, it can sit in four different positions depending on the current situation. These positions include:
- If the sun is shining, the butterfly will open and relax its wings
- If danger approaches while in the sunlight the butterfly will open its wings further revealing eyespots on its hindwings
- If the sun is not shining the butterfly will close its wings
- If danger approaches while there is no sunlight the butterfly will raise its frontwings revealing hidden eyespots

Whenever I open your blog my day is happier than it was. I so enjoy the bits of nature you photograph and explain. I learned lots today about the Meadow Argus butterfly. Fascinating.

That’s an amazing creature. I guess we’ve all heard of “mother’s with eyes in the back of their heads” but that butterfly has it beaten.

Wonderful photos, Christine – especially the second one. That’s a definite ‘wow’! The eyespots are fascinating. I just popped over to see whether you’d published your book yet and I notice you’ve posted chapters of it on your blog. So does that mean you’ve published it, or not? (Confused.com here. 🙂 ) As I said, I’d love to read it when it is.

All part of my dastardly pre-publishing marketing plan, Millie! I’m self publishing at Amazon and Smashwords in mid-April (eBook only). and hope to add print-on-demand in December when I release Book Two.
In the meantime I am publishing scenes at Wattpad – a scene at a time until the end – and just the first four chapters here and at cjrandall.com.
I’m gradually building up ‘reads’ at Wattpad (approaching 400) and have a few followers. I’m enjoying encouraging the young ones in their writing. Gosh, to be young again in this era!
Anyway, with barely a calendar month to go, I’m flat out fussing with it, editing, rewriting. You will be the first to get the final, polished version! It needs a lot of polishing. Some late nights and early mornings this next month! Glad you liked my photos – I have a new camera. (2nd hand Nikon DSLR)
