Pieris rapae

As kids, we always called this Small White Butterfly a cabbage moth. My dad had wonderful vegetable gardens and – cringe – he had us using our tennis racquets as weapons of mass destruction when these butterflies came to lay eggs.

These days, they get free rein in my garden, no matter what their caterpillars eat. Here, it is in the abelia bush.

Pieris rapae: small cabbage white butterfly

Several weeks back, you may recall that I was excited upon seeing a few big butterflies in my garden. I hoped for the unusual variety like we had at this time last year. Didn’t happen. There’s a few of the orange ones about, but I can’t get a decent go at those.

Luckily, I can always rely on the Small White when I’m in butterfly mode. (Nikon D3000)
