Drawing Dragon Heads

Hello people. I haven’t forgotten that I promised you the Condo750 post (car, bike rally). Decided to share something new that I’ve been doing, instead.

Recently, I’ve been learning how to draw dragons. I suppose I am actually relearning how to draw – something I’ve barely done over the last 25-30 years. This is the second version of this drawing, after ‘fixing’ it, as you can plainly see. I used a tutorial on DragoArt.

I have a dragon ‘art book’ on Wattpad, and I also put these drawings on my official author platform cjrandall.com. (That reminds me, I must update my publishing schedule there.) I also pop them on Instagram if I think of it.

wattpad cover of 'art book' I’m Learning to Draw Dragons is actually doing okay on Wattpad, I think, despite only having 8 drawings with 2 of them both variations of the one above – with a total of 293 reads and 69 votes. Each page/chapter is counted as one read when someone spends enough time on it.

And, in case you are wondering, Taniel has 24 published parts on Wattpad, with 476 reads and 47 votes and has been added to some reading lists. I’m happy with the 10% ratio of votes to reads.

I eventually realised that I needed to put some cardboard under the sheet in the project book so I don’t gouge the page underneath. I haven’t got a delicate hand! My first few sketches still have the constructions lines.

My eye-brain-hand coordination has improved over my 8 sessions. I’m less daunted by the blank page. Speaking of blank pages, I better get back to my writing. I think I prefer blank pages to editing!  Catch youse later.

    Top one is a handsome devil, looks as though he could have a bit of a twinkle in his eye. Keep up the good work. Edit with one hand & draw with the other

    • Ha ha. I’ve finally got another scene on Wattpad and another ready to add tomorrow. I shouldn’t keep deciding to write in new scenes to save my characters thinking backwards. This series is going to be 10 books long the rate I’m going. My brain is stuffed for today, though. Thanks for your support, Sue. 🙂

    We (my husband, Paul and I…and the staff) used to buy #2’s by the gross…it was our tool for sketching…always on bumwad, a thin stiff tissue, for preliminary designing. You might enjoy charcoal bars for practicing a light hand because you hold it differently…it is very messy, though. A heavy hand is indicative of high tension…you will relax as you become more famiiar with the mediums you are using. Your dragon sketch is quite good. I am partial to them because i was born in a dragon year. I have one in my bookcase in front of a small chinese screen of four panels You are so full of surprises…!!!

    • I am full of surprises [chuckles] – one doesn’t get 61 years under the belt without a few experiences along the way. I have used charcoal in the past and it is indeed messy. I did most of my drawing back in high school and still have the sketchpad somewhere – kittens, grandma’s cockatoo, a stuffed deer head, all sorts of memories, plus the odd self-portrait including a semi-nude with a slightly exaggerated torso. I hope the mice haven’t eaten the sketchpad, I’m not sure where it is.

      I’ve loved dragons ever since reading The Hobbit in the late ’60s.

    • Tolkien’s dragons would suit you, then – his were long and slender with wiry arms and not unlike a crocodile with wings. Thanks for dropping in, Hilary.
